The Foundations of a Successful Home-Based Business

In this day and age, it is nearly impossible to maintain a decent standard of living on one paycheck, but in a family with children, it is not always possible for both parents to work outside the home. Daycare costs, the need for a second car, and spending too much time away from the children are all common disadvantages. However, this is precisely the situation in which a Home Based Business excels.

Home-based businesses are fantastic and can be extremely profitable, but without the proper knowledge and tools, you can waste an enormous amount of time and/or money, which defeats the purpose you set out with, which is to make money and have time to do the things you want to do. This article was written to provide the average person like you and me with a practical guideline for getting started in a home-based business the right way, saving you time and money.

My experience has taught me that there are three main pillars or principles of a successful home-based business.

Pillar #1: It must have a low initial investment.

A home-based business with a high start-up cost will take longer to turn a profit, and as previously stated, time is one of the things we are trying to save. A low cost will also make the home-based business more accessible to a larger number of families or individuals who are just getting started.

Pillar #2: It should be simple to set up and maintain.

Whatever your home business project is, the more complicated it is, the more likely you are to give up before you see a profit. A simple to start and maintain business will give you confidence and a sense of accomplishment as you complete each simple step in the process.

Let's face it, if you enjoyed squandering a lot of time and effort running a home-based business, you wouldn't be reading this. This is about giving you more time to spend with your family and doing things you enjoy, not about creating another taskmaster to replace your job! The first two pillars of a solid home-based business are required for the third to take place.

Third, it must provide a quick return on investment. (ROI)

You can spend months developing a home-based business, but if no real profit is generated in a reasonable amount of time, many people will become discouraged and give up. What is an appropriate amount of time? I would plan for a time frame of weeks rather than months. Depending on the type of home-based business, some people have seen a decent ROI within days, and as unbelievable as it may sound, some businesses dealing with affiliate marketing and sales can see profit as soon as 15 minutes from startup!

"That's too simple!" you might be thinking. Let me say that there is enough detail within these three pillars to keep anyone busy. The business you choose to start should be something that interests you and possibly even something in which you already have some experience. Whatever home-based business you start, make sure it is supported by the three pillars listed in this article. Make the mistake of overcomplicating your efforts, or you will quickly become bogged down with a lot of unnecessary wasted time and effort.

Here's to the success of your home-based business.
